Welcome July. What is Yoga?

It is a holistic millennial discipline that considers the human being as a whole spirit-body-mind in connection with the whole, the Universe. Through their practice, harmony and unity between them is sought. It comes from the Sanskrit word YUG which means union. There are many ways to practice yoga, for example:

  • Sing mantras
  • Paint yantras or mandalas
  • Breathing techniques or pranayama
  • Get into service
  • Practice of asanas (physical postures), etc.

It is a discipline that through the practice of yoga methods, a set of techniques, lead to SAMADHI. Samadhi, in short, is to reach a state of bliss, fullness, enlightenment, happiness, all together. In modernity, many people practice it for well-being, harmony and quality of life.

It teaches us to know our spirit, to respect our body and to educate our mind, to be in harmony and be able to expand our being. It gives us emotional intelligence to know how to manage our emotions without clinging to them and thus avoid the suffering generated by emotional attachment.

It is originally from the Hindustan region, it became popular in India, as it was also professionalized in the rest of the world. Nowadays for many people it is a profession to teach yoga and we respond to a code of ethics. There are many types of yoga, but yoga is a LAIC discipline.

The first teachings are attributed to Shiva and Hiranyagarbha. Then his disciples respectively were Matsyendra, Gonika and Patanjali. The latter codified the teachings of yoga in the YOGA SUTRAS. Here is the 8 steps for Classical Yoga and they are:

  • Yama
  • Niyama
  • Asana
  • Pranayama
  • Pratiahara
  • Dharan
  • Dhyana
  • Samadhi

Activate the bell on my profile and don't miss more information about this in another post, so you don't get dizzy with so much data today.

A yoga METHOD is a set of techniques that lead to samadhi, while a yoga STYLE is a way of giving a method. Example: one method is Hatha Yoga, while Yoga Flow, Power Yoga, Therapeutic Yoga, are styles of Hatha Yoga.

It's a way of life. It's philosophy, it's culture, it's art, it's nutrition, it's health, it's love. To do/be yoga is to give your best version, but being aware that it is NOT a linear process, but a proactive according to our own rhythm and spiritual path.

If it serves to your self or to someone else, please spread the word, share it, like it, leave me your comment below I'll be pleased to read you.

A big big hug, with all my love.

Pauli
